Cali Runner

A California beach endless runner I designed and built for the browser. A surfer races along a sunset beach, dodging crabs, rocks and waves while collecting pineapples, stars and surfboards.

I wanted a small project where design and code meet in real time โ€” where every visual decision changes how something feels in your hands. I designed the whole experience: the visual world, the character, obstacles, collectibles, HUD, and the start and game-over screens. Then I coded it.

Press Space, click or tap to jump โ€” twice for a double jump.

A sunset palette โ€” violet sky, orange sun, teal sea, warm sand โ€” makes the setting read in a split second. A three-layer parallax of palm trees gives depth to a flat canvas and sells the feeling of speed.

  • Double jump โ€” one more chance to fix a late reaction.
  • Three lives with invincibility frames โ€” a hit costs you, but never chains into an unfair second hit.
  • Progressive speed โ€” easy to start, harder the longer you last.
  • Saved high score โ€” the reason to press "play again".

Decision

One input does everything โ€” Space, click or tap โ€” so the same game works on a laptop and a phone without a tutorial.

I also cut a gameplay trailer in After Effects and designed key art in portrait and landscape for social and store pages.

If I took it further

1

An online leaderboard to turn high scores into a social loop.

2

Sound design and haptics on mobile for every jump and pickup.
